The Giant USS George Washington Pays First Visit to Brazil Since 2015 Commemorating 200 Years of Diplomatic Relations

U.S.-Brazil military ties remain strong despite diplomatic strain caused by Brazil's President Lula's alignment with China, distancing Brazil from the U.S. The USS George Washington's visit to Brazil commemorates 200 years of diplomatic relations, highlighting the U.S.'s commitment to the region. China and Brazil are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic ties on the same week.

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and the United States may be strained but the relations between the two militaries remain positive. Brazil's President Lulu is positioning Brazil to be the chief agent of China in Latin America, which is the source of the strain from the side of the Americans. Lula veered the country away from alignment with the United States as was the case under Bolsonaro.


The battle group, led by the USS Washington, arrived in Brazil to commemorate the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Brazil and America. The giant carrier last visited Brazil in 2015.

China and Brazil are celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties the same week as the USS George Washington docking.



The aircraft carrier is part of the U.S. Southern Command, which is engaging in joint exercises with the 4th Fleet Naval Forces which includes naval contributions from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay. The name of the exercise is Southern Seas 2024.
