Spain Recalls Ambassador Following Milei's Remarks on Corruption Allegations Linked to Spanish Prime Minister's Wife

Spain withdraws ambassador from Buenos Aires after President Javier Milei's remarks on corruption allegations against PM Sánchez's wife earlier in May in Madrid. Milei criticizes the withdrawal as "arrogant socialist nonsense." The situation reflects broader tensions between Spain's socialist government and international leaders, as well as ongoing debates about corruption and leadership within Spain with Spain's PM experiencing low ratings.

On Tuesday, Spain announced the withdrawal of its ambassador from Buenos Aires over comments President Javier Milei delivered in Madrid earlier in May at the Viva24 political event.

“They don’t know what type of society and country (socialism) can produce and what kind of people chained to power and what levels of abuse it can generate,” Milei said in his speech, before weighing in on the corruption allegations against Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez.

“Even if he has a corrupt wife, he gets dirty and takes five days to think about it,” he said, referring to the time Sánchez took considering whether to step down after the accusations came to light.

As of May 2024, the corruption proceedings against Begoña Gómez, the wife of the socialist Prime Minister of Spain, are still under deliberation. The allegations were initially lodged with the courts on April 24, 2024.

In response, Milei lambasted the decision to withdraw its ambassador as “nonsense typical of an arrogant socialist.”

Spain's Socialist Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, came to power in June 2018 after a successful vote of no confidence against then-Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of the People's Party. Under his leadership, the country has faced a number of economic challenges, including high unemployment and a significant public debt.
